Women n Sync Team

In the bustling, hectic atmosphere of New York City, 12 women meet
in the quiet stillness of dawn outdoors to pursue their love of skating.

Each, with the same passion they bring to their busy career and
family lives, strives to skate their best: twelve women skating as one.
Together, they make a team.

A passion for life, A passion for work,A passion for skating!

Founded by Coach Nina Newby in November, 2005, Women n Sync was inspired by New York City's Men n Sync, the all-male synchronized skating team. Both teams are sponsored by the Skating Club of New York. Women n Sync skaters range in age from twenty-something to fifty-something, with careers in law, business, architecture, graphic design, fashion, theater, and music. Some have been skating and competing their entire lives; some have skated seriously for only a few years. All enjoy the camaraderie of friendly competition and the thrill of performing before an audience.

Their first competition, in the Open Adult category took place in February, 2006 at the Lee Ann Miele Classic. In April 2006, Coach Nina featured her Women n Sync team at the Yonkers Spring Skating show. The 2006-2007 skating season has proved to be a successful one for the team. Women n Sync competed in the Terry Connors Synchronized Skating competition on December 3, 2006 and had a first place victory. Later in the month the team exhibited in the Holiday on Ice show at Chelsea Piers Sky Rink. On January 6, the team won the silver at the Synchronized Skating Classic in Lake Placid New York in January 2007. Next stop: Easterns in Providence, RI! Several more exhibitions are also planned for spring 2007.

Join the Team

New members are welcomed. Women n Sync currently competes in Adult Open. The team hopes to compete in the Adult Masters category in 2007-2008. The skill level currently required is Adult pre-bronze; skaters must be over 25 and the majority of the team must be over age 35. Skaters pay regular dues to cover the cost of ice time and coaching. Practices are held in winter at Wollman Rink; in summer, at Chelsea Piers. If you are interested in joining the team, contact us at womennsync@hotmail.com

Support the Team

In 2006, Women n Sync was the honored recipient of a major donation to assist the team with ice time fees. Ice time in New York City is among the most expensive ice in the United States and the amount of time available to practice directly impacts the team’s competitive ability. Donations are welcome at any time and should be sent to:
The Skating Club of New York
(Chelsea Piers Pier 62 Room 207 New York, NY 10011)

About the Skaters

Helen Chan, architect and mom of 3, started skating for fun as a young teen at Central Park long, long ago. When her daughter started competing 12 years ago, Helen thought she would try it too. Since then, she's been enthralled with the world of adult skating. Skating keeps her happy, sane, and young at heart.

Gwendolyn Toth is a professional musician who began skating three years ago when she discovered the pleasures of skating outdoors at Rockefeller Center every morning. Gwen has three children (two of whom skate) with husband and fellow harpsichordist Dongsok Shin who doesn't mind being awakened at 5 am for skating practice.

Fusae Nara is an attorney specializing in customs and international trade law. She began skating seriously a few years ago after having spent a lot of time on the ice with her two children who love skating at Wollman Rink. Her children and husband are the biggest cheerleaders for Fusae to hang on to this synchro team. Skating is the best stress-buster for her!

Gay Andrews came out of skating retirement to join the team, and is having a blast skating with Women 'N Sync. She is a TI manager at Citigroup, and shares her home with her life partner and a small menagerie. Her other loves include gardening and vacations by the seashore.

Christine Rigby Hutton grew up skating in Canada, starting at the age of three years. She loves skating for its fitness, artistic, and social aspects. Christine has been living in New York since 2000 and works for Pfizer.

Susan Neiman began skating as a young girl but got sidetracked into being a ballerina instead. Returning to skating 15 years ago, she now also serves as a skating judge and accountant, and is a board member of the Skating Club of NY. Daytime finds her as accountant for the Roundabout Theater Company.
